The Bangor Humane Society is dedicated to the humane treatment of all pets through education, advocacy and quality care. We take unwanted or lost pets, rehabilitate them and place them into loving, lifelong homes.
In collaboration with the State Department of Animal Welfare and local animal control officers, we rescue neglected and abused animals, nurse them back to health and find them new homes.
Our full-time licensed veterinary technician works with area veterinarians to assure that all medical needs are attended to and all animals are spayed or neutered before leaving the shelter, furthering our mission to control pet over-population.
We provide humane education to children so they can become the caring pet owners of the future. We recognize and promote the important role pets play in our lives through our outreach efforts and strive to make life-long, enriching bonds between people and animals.
Our robust volunteer and foster program allows individuals to help us give the animals we care for the treatment they deserve. With over 200 volunteers and growing, our animals are showered with kindness, care and compassion.
We couldn’t accomplish our life-saving work if not for our supporters like you. We are excited to connect with members of our community who want to join us in saving lives.
Traditional Volunteer Program
The traditional volunteer program at BHS is the core of our volunteer team as it allows for direct interaction with the animals in our care as well as assist with daily shelter operations. Because of this, we ask for a commitment of 1 shift a week of roughly 2hours. This program requires participants to be 10 years old or older, and with parental supervision onsite at all times until the age of 16.
Fast Track Volunteer Program
Fast track volunteers come to BHS and help with “shelter helper” tasks – sweeping, mopping, laundry, dishes – all things that are crucial to our work! This is an easy program with no commitment necessary, just stop by BHS and get started today! Participants of this program must be 18 or accompanied by an adult.
Dog’s Day Out
Are you a dog lover looking to help out? Look no further! This program allows members of the public to sign out one of our adoptable dogs for an afternoon of fun – whether that means going to your house to just hang out or go for a hike, it is completely up to you! This program also requires no commitment or training. Participants of this program must be 18 or accompanied by an adult.
Our Community Service program is for individuals who are required to perform a specific amount of volunteer hours in a short period of time (court-ordered, educational, etc.). these volunteers help with “shelter helper” tasks, but if they are required a larger sum of hours they may also have the opportunity to work directly with the animals as well. Space is limited and some restrictions apply. To learn more, please email our Volunteer Director Katelyn Stoddard at [email protected]
Our foster program helps prepare pets for adoption by pairing them with a home that will provide them attention and care until they are ready to hit the adoption floor! From kittens and puppies, to medical and behavioral fosters, every foster home is a helpful one. We supply everything you may need, you just supply the warm home and the love!
