Make a Difference in the Lives of Animals
Are you passionate about animals and looking for a way to give back to the community? Volunteering at Bangor Humane Society (BHS) is a great way to make a lasting impact. By joining our team of dedicated volunteers, you’ll provide essential care, love, and support to animals in need while gaining valuable experience and connecting with a like-minded community.
How to Get Started:
If you’re interested, please reach out to Chelsea Brown, our Volunteer and Community Outreach Director, at [email protected] to sign up or learn more. Please be aware we currently have an orientation and training waiting list for new volunteers.
Volunteering at BHS
BHS offers a variety of volunteer programs that contribute to the success of our mission. Whether you’re walking dogs, cleaning kennels, or helping with events, your efforts will have a significant impact.
Volunteers must be 10 years old or older. We require parental supervision on-site at all times until the age of 16. Volunteers under the age of 16 are unable to work with canines.
Here are some ways you can get involved:
Traditional Volunteer Programs:
- Dog Walking
Join us daily at 8:00 AM and 3:15 PM to walk our canine friends. Rain or shine, they appreciate the opportunity to stretch their legs outside their kennels. - Cleaning Kennels
We clean all kennels daily at 9:00 AM. Your help ensures the animals have a clean and comfortable environment. Many hands make light work, and we also love seeing our animals socialized! - Events
Help us spread the word about our mission and animals at offsite events. These outreach opportunities are fun and essential for engaging the community. - General Cleaning
From 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, 365 days a year, there’s always cleaning to be done, including dishes, laundry, and facility maintenance. Your help keeps our shelter running smoothly. - And more!

Can’t Commit to a Weekly Schedule?
While we encourage at least a two-hour weekly commitment, we understand schedules can be tight. We are flexible and will work with you to find a volunteer plan that fits your availability.
Fast-Track Volunteer Program:
If you’re unable to commit to regular volunteering, our fast-track program offers “shelter helper” tasks like sweeping, mopping, laundry, and dishes. While this doesn’t involve animal handling, these tasks are crucial for shelter operations. There’s minimal training, and you can jump right in!
- Participants must be 16 or older, or accompanied by an adult.
Group Volunteering:
Are you part of a group looking to volunteer? We welcome group volunteering through our Fast Track Program! Groups of 10 or fewer can help staff with tasks such as creating enrichment for the animals, cleaning the lobby, or maintaining the yard.
- Group volunteering requires a list of names, and a volunteer release form must be filled out.
- Scheduled times will be coordinated with our Volunteer Director.
Community Service:
If you need community service hours for court-ordered or education-based requirements, we offer opportunities for individuals to volunteer. Space is limited, and some restrictions apply. Please email Chelsea Brown at [email protected] for more information.
